Sagas Simians: I return to the Planet of the Simians (Beneath the Planet of the Apes)

Ted Post, 1970
The first one of the aftermath of “The planet of the simians” starts just where it was finishing the first delivery, in fact the images of Nova and Taylor (it is still Charlton Heston although with a short role) discovering the remains of New York are the beginning of the movie. While they continue his exploration for the prohibited area we see like a rescue ship space / storm comes from the same point that Taylor, repeating his disastrous landing surviving only Brent (James Franciscus). It nongoes it loses Taylor after this one suffers strange visions, and finds Brent.
It nongoes takes his new friend with Zira in search of advice, while in parallel the simians are shaken: Ursus, a new and bellicose general gorilla wants to begin a military campaign to explore and to conquer the part of planet that they have vetoed (the prohibited area). With the support of Zaius (the orangoutang the minister of science, let's remember) the campaign begins, but in the course of his explorations the army begins to suffer similar hallucinations to which Taylor had suffered. Brent and It Nongoes finally they are captured but they manage to escape and to get in a few underground caves where Brendt realizes from which it is and discovers a group of human beings that has evolved of an amazing way having developed extraordinary mental powers, at the time that they produce refined catastrophes to. better I do not explain it of brave that is!!!!
- the powerful army simian took the whole budget, they did not leave a five-peseta coin for mock-ups -
Undoubtedly the first one of the aftermath simians is a good tape of science fiction realized with desire and overcoming the scarce budget (the mock-ups of the apocalypse of New York are a little of rummage sale, the truth). Little stays of the original novel except the plot premise and the personages, being the thickness of the plot harvests own of the scriptwriters. And go if they obtain an interesting history with this full-fledged human race (year 3500 + let's remember) but that nevertheless they produce cult to ridiculous deities (although once it dresses the movie you realize that if the current human being has been 2000 years producing cult to Jesus Christ, the motive of cult of this civilization does not stop having certain sense).
- educated strangers preside at the movie in not so hallucinated brave moments as it might be thought -
Undoubtedly the best of the tape there is this beginning where several histories interlace of effective form and it becomes possible to transmit interest to know the courses of the history, which certainly evolves for unexpected areas, it is not possible to accuse to this consequence of slightly ambitious. Ted Post emulates the style of Franklin J. Schaffner with distant captures and extracting party of the natural stages. A pity that the ending where the different plots come together narrates of slightly abrupt form and that some details of the second part of the tape as these ritual strangers rub the psicotronía (or the ridiculousness as we see it from the point of view freakie or conventional, there you in whom group you think).
- with you Ursus (they were already meeting Zaius) on the verge of tying it up brown -
As a whole “Return to the planet of the simians” is one more than correct science fiction tape entirely disfrutable despite his lacks, which undoubtedly it would be more known of not being for being in the shade of the great work that is the original movie. Certainly that of incredible form for the way in which it finishes the tape, the saga still would leave three aftermath of (very variable quality.

Bad Earths (Badlands)

Terrence Malick, 1973
The portraits of psychopaths or sordid personages put in the same context that infantile or innocent mentalities have left always big movies to us, often troublemakers. We have only to remember the famous scene of Frankenstein and the girl on the banks of the lake, but from to "M" up to “Tideland“, happening for “Taxi driver” or “The night of the hunter”, the topic has always resulted from the most effective thing for the film makers who have been able to extract party.
"Bad Earths" there was the début of Terrence Malick, the slightly prolific author of the brilante "The thin red line". Malick obtained the money to roll it of an independent producer and in a pass for critics it left them to all with the open mouth managing so a big study will bet for distributing it. Nevertheless it was a round defeat in his premiere since the public could not assimilate a history of so ambiguous morality. Since then the movie has loaded with a completely fully deserved aura of movie of cult.
- kit strolling around for the badlands -
The history is simple: Kit is a solitary boy interpreted by Martin Sheen (who was already going on from the about thirty but a 19-year-old personage was interpreting) that falls in love with Holly (Sissy Spacek), a girl of 15 submitted by his father to an iron moral discipline. This one is opposed to the relation with what the young people glides to escape, but the father surprises them and Kit in full affray ends up by murdering it, event that of form turbadora leaves the indifferent girl. Nothing prevents so from escaping with his fiancé to be lived to the forest out of any moral rule and where the violence and the death will be practised as if of a children's untranscendent game it was talking each other. The big wise move of "Bad Earths", the fact is that mostly it is narrated by the voice in off of Holly who reaches port innocent and unreal point of view on the monstrosities that there is committing his partner inspired certainly by the real psychopath Charles Starkweather who left a deaths trickle of water after himself in the 1957 accompanied by his thirteen-year-old fiancée.
- kit and Holly in full huída -
Everything works in this movie like a watchmaker's mechanism: The interpretation of Sissy Spacek like Holly detaches the whole naivety and the innocence that the personage needs and transforms the vision of the facts on having put them under his point of view. The sound-track made with the use appellant of melodies of Carl Orff and Erik Satie always turns out to be brilliant and provides to the set of big finished formally, and that to say about the photo of the beautiful natural places where there passes the majority of the escape of the protagonists (the arid sceneries of the American badlands). Also we might speak about the secondary personages, guessed right and very elegant all of them.
One of those tapes is "bad grounds" morally ambiguous that are an artistic victory and a commercial defeat. Certainly this movie is any less conventional thing and it is little less than a masterpiece.

Sagas Simians: Flight of the Planet of the Simians (Leakage from the Planet of the Apes)

Don Taylor, 1971
After the final apocalypse of “Return to the planet of the simians” seemed improbable that there was a third delivery of the serial, but the friend Arthur P. Jacobs (producer of the whole saga) at the last hour should to him have seen economic opportunities to keep on being thrown of the thread however much as we will see the plot premise it is taken by the hair, although it is necessary to admit that the thing has certain grace.
It turns out that this delivery is ambientada at present (good the actuality of 1972): A spaceship falls down suddenly to the sea, coming a rescue team to find three astronauts going out of her with what we obtain the foreseeable one although effective scene of these taking the helmets from him to reveal his simian face. They are neither more nor less than Zira and Aurelio (Cornelius) more a scientist who had devoted himself to repair the ship in which Taylor bequeathed to the future in the first delivery. He does not go so far as to know how it managed to repair it with his primitive technology and very much less how they knew by intuition the new apocalypse to activate the inverse program to which he was still Taylor and to be saved traveling this way to present times. At this point of the saga we are not also going to demand from him too much the poor scriptwriters who had enough in spite of trying to keep on pulling the thread with the presupposed, and clear minimum, for which minor budgeted that ambientar the history in present times …
- Ahivá who has come! -
The simians are received by surprise and since these conceal his intelligence in the first instance, they are treated purely like animal and they deposited in the local Zoo. We see images of file of different animals and a deplorable orangoutang man-in-suit to reveal again the budgetary lacks. This fragment turns out to be slightly disappointing since it seems that his target is only to spoil the plot premises of the saga and to set in his place to the simians, emphasizing too much that the human beings them treat with equal cruelty that the simians of the future treat the human beings. When there is discovered the intelligence and capacities of the simians, these happen to be treated like authentic celebrities in scenes of a notable television tufillo and a kitsch authentically setentero but unequivocally entertaining.
- dressed simian, humanized simian -
“Leakage from.” it is clearly a movie with the trick gained in advance of the investment of rolls, and his scriptwriters play that at exploiting. When the human beings discover the origin of the simians and the future human being that they prophesy, there wake up in them identical fears and fascist behaviors that cannot finish but with the pursuit of these simians that threaten his existence. It is a question of cloning the argument "the other way round", the human beings are exactly equal of savages that the simians of the future. Scarcely they look for tones, what turns out to be something disappointing. Curiously the plot element of major openwork (the pregnancy simian) is a taken aspect of the original novel, in which the human protagonists are increased his pursuit before his "intelligent" reproduction.
- that creature sweetie...-
A pair of very interesting notes: The fragment where finally Aurelio reports since the simians took the supremacy on the human beings also continues faithfully the history of the events that in the original novel there narrates a human being submitted to an experiment of "temporary memory" (history that certainly we will see expanded with all details luxury in the following delivery of the saga). And of course it turns out to be impossible to obviate the raised temporary paradox: the human beings try to suppress to the intelligent simians come from the future to prepare the future reported by these, but …: if really this is the future, as it can be far-sighted? Anyway, the typical paradoxes of the tapes of trips in the time, and that that here explains the topic to itself with all details luxury in a television transmission in an interesting informative moment that justifies himself the whole movie.
- the theory of the informative relativity, even a simian would understand it -
So discreet delivery that manages to avoid his predictability with ingenuity and the good one to do in the script that it was a stamp of the best series B. It keeps on being essential for fans of the saga especially because it is linked straight with the following delivery, which the sorrow deserves very much.

Rock Movies by TQX (Presentation)

Movies and Rock, rock and movies.... the movies has come closer for ages the most widely used forms of popular culture (cómics, literature, etc.) and the world of the rock could not be an exception. Be already in biopics of real artists that they have wanted to give us a portrait of a group or artist, or painting the portrait of epochs or of musical scenes with imaginary bands, or even using the topic to realize the biggest imaginable marcianadas. All the epochs have left brilliant movies to us on the topic, and those that are not so brilliant perhaps they have interest in the treated topic....
"Rock Movies by TQX" is a partial specialization that I try to give him to this place. Some time ago that explored the connections rock - cinema and we will be able to do interesting articles on this matter. To clarify that what I am interested in is as the world of the rock has painted the portrait in the movies, not movies with sound-track neither of rocker nor operas - rock (that topics are both that also I like very much but that I do not try to touch at the moment). Basically three are the categories that we will touch: Artists' Biopics (real or imaginary, little matters), portraits of musical, and documentary scenes. I do not try to cover concerts, although sometimes the barrier is diffuse in tapes that are the recording of a concert but they contribute many other things as "Rattle and Hum" of U2, the recent Scorsesse recording with the Stones, or "Live at Pompeii" of Pink Floyd, tapes which artistic or documentary qualities go much further of receiving a sonorous moment in celluloid and that therefore we are interested in.
We even have a signature and everything for the articles about this section:

And nothing better to begin that a premiere, so tomorrow the same we start with "I'm not there", the Martian but most interesting biopic on the figure of Bob Dylan who with only two years of delay comes now to our screens. Ím not there.... Rock Movies by TQX....

Todd Haynes, 2007
Bob Dylan is one of the cultural icons of last century. There are episodes of his life and it works that are recorded to fire in the golden book of the culture rock as his famous metamorphosis of folk singer-songwriter to electrical rocker who took for surprise his fans in the festival of Newport of 1965, or his conversion to the Christianity at the end of the 70 that led him to surprising with a series of sound álbumes gospel song and spiritual content. In any case it is a question of one of the most important artists of the history of the rock and an authentic legend that during the 60s influenced the way of thinking about million persons and played an unequivocal role in the alternative revolution of ends of this decade.
There are several documentaries that come closer Dylan's figure as famous "Don't look back" of 1967 or the recent one “not direction home” realized by Martin Scorsese in 2005, but for this first dramatization of his figure it might not have adopted a more unusual approach. Never a biopic appears to the use, there tries to offer itself rather a series of vignettes guided by different personages (some of them Dylan's embodiments but also figures inspired by his work or his tastes) that allow to come closer different aspects of his work and his personality:" Inspired by the music and many lives of Bod Dylan" it is possible to read in the credits of the beginning of the tape. And the proposal is risked first of all and he would say that difficult to assimilate for those who do not bear very in mind the career of the man. On contrary, the approach is certainly an original, offering something like collage of free pieces that once tacked allow you to have the finished perspective.
- six personages, that not six Dylans, you do not believe the publicity...-
Six principal personages guide the movie in different narrative threads that we see inserted without apparent order. It is a question of Woody (Marcus Carl Franklin), a vagabond who travels in load cars with his guitar and who is a follower of a folk singer-songwriter of who Dylan was excited follower, this personage serves to have a vision of the origin of the popular musics at the beginning of the 50, and also to represent the false biographies that Dylan was assuming (it is presented like “trick“ in the initial scenes where it presents all the personages to itself). Then we have Jack Rollins (Christian Bale) who personifies Dylan in two key phases of his life: his success as folk singer-songwriter in the first half of the 60, and his spiritual conversion at the end of the 70. It would be said that the personage who loads with major weight is Jude Quinn (Fail Blanchett), who interprets to the personage during his famous 'electrification' (in an allegorical scene where the band shoots the public with machine guns), and his tours along the England of the swinging' London of middle of the 60 that allows us to be present at his polemic declarations and clashes with the press, meetings with lights of the epoch (Beatles, Stones...), etc.
- Take electrification! -
We still have left Arthur (Ben Whishaw), a personage surrendered to a stranger examination of that we never see the authors of the questions, but that serves like articulador of the numerous famous phrases that assume to Dylan, Robbie Clark (Heath Ledger), an actor who prepares a movie on the artist and who allows to assimilate his matrimonial problems to which there suffered proper Dylan (the wife is interpreted by Charlotte Gainsborough). And finally the bravest is Billy “the child” (Richard Gere), undoubtedly the one that more is going to mess up the one who comes closer the tape of a chance way. This personage has his meaning of life due to Dylan's participation in the movie of Sam Peckimpah "Pat Garrett and Billy the kid”. Billy is walked by a rural area of last century before winks to Dylan's songs, some of them so Martians as ostriches or giraffes they walking along the midwest. In this fragment we can see winks to other personages of the movie in an authentic puzzle for deciphering.
- Christian Bale with a look that molaría enough for Terminator 5 -
Since we see different personages and aspects that they can confuse (and they will confuse) to many spectators, except whom they go with the made duties or are well expert in the career of the personage. But risked since it is the exercise (in addition to the multiple personages and stories the color and the B/N are alternated, and one experiments with narrative forms like the false documentary), it would be said that Todd Haynes leaves with his and takes to good port the proposal. For it it is provided with the big work in the performances of most of actors (the cast is certainly a depositor): Fail Blanchett was nominated to the Oscar like better supporting actress last year by this movie, and certainly it gives the asexual touch of the personage in the epoch. Haynes allows himself debatable licenses, like the "machine-gunning" of the hearing, the abstract fragment of the personage of Richard Gere who for me does not reach port too much, or the staging of the "death" of the spirit of original Dylan with an authentic burial. But in general everything ends up by having sense (I do not assure that in the first visionado) and leaves a very interesting movie to us however much the proposal one might have specified something more and not to leave it in such an abstract plane, anything that will prevent from coming to more public. So the author of wonderful "Velvet Goldmine" (one of the best approaches from the movies to the culture rock of the one that we will speak shortly) leaves to us the most interesting movie that undoubtedly is worth it.
- Billy the child little crecidito looking for giraffes and ostriches -
I have not spoken about the sound-track that of course is what was missing to finish off the movie. A sound-track that alternates some of the topics most known about the teacher with other pieces of his catalog some less frequent ones, a few times in his original capitulations and others in versions of friendly bands of the director.

The Soloist (The Soloist)

Joe Wright, 2009
The argument of this movie is summed up in few lines: A journalist interpreted by Robert Downey Jr boy looking for histories for his column and one day finds a street musician with mental problems (Jamie Foxx) to the one who tries to help while it finds out the history after his problems, but, mmmmmm: a moment!: do we go so far as to find out the history after his problems?, since they hear, I believe that not. So many flashback where it seems that big revelations go to be done to us and these never come, so for this side of the argument disappointment to the singing. Skylight that another thing is the history of this relation that starts of way interested on the part of a journalist who tries to exploit his find, then to feel the need to do things for his alone indigent friend to realize that this one the only thing that he wants his friendship is. Certainly, devastating the words of the publisher of the newspaper (a wasted Catherine Keener) encouraging the use of anonymous protagonists then to leave wire drawing.
The movie keeps back well thanks to the big interpretations of Downey Jr and Foxx that personages very elaborated create but come up the course of the plot we wonder which is the history that they want to tell us, because when it seems that the focus is the capture of conscience on the problems of the mad homeless, it turns out that they try to us to strain a goal of personal overcoming, and when two protagonists fight and reconcile, it seems to us to be before a dessert telefilm.
- "The soloist" and family before beginning his flipada (and ours) -
It is curious because the movie allows to be seen and he even would say that it contains brilliant moments (the meetings in the tunnel of the freeway, these concerts at which the protagonists are present...) in addition to being provided with a few actors that alone they bear the tape, but these irritants flashbacks that do not contribute absolutely anything and the mentioned absence of direction does that there is diluted a proposal that it might have gone a long way more. A really curious moment is this "visualization" of as the Foxx personage "sees" the music: During three minutes only we see colors flashes moving to the Beethoven rhythm in a visual creation that would not be out of tune in any movie setentera of hallucinogenic trips.

Sagas Simians: The rebellion of the simians (Conquest of the Planet of the Apes)

J. Lee Thompson, 1972
After the improvable third delivery of our saga favorite simian, the series mends the flight and finally we are going to be witnesses of the riot that it puts to the simians supervised by the planet over the human beings. We are in 1991 and after an epidemic that left the human beings without favourite animals, these received to the simians in his houses. Little by little there were stopping being pets to realize domestic works and to turn into authentic slaves treated with cruelty, in addition to being submitted to a totalitarian diet that watches them and suppresses. In this culture medium, it is not strange that signs of rebellion appear and that also the terrestrial leaders worry before the possible existence between them of a legendary simian with the faculty to speak that he can guide to those of his species to the victory.
Obviously be new "chosen" (in the best tradition of the Nero, John Connor, etc.) it is César, Aurelio's son (Cornelius) and Zira, the only survivor of the intelligent simians come from the future and that it is supported under the protection of the circus businessman Arming (Ricardo Montalbán). The argument develops according to the realization of the simian of the oppression to which his class turns out to be submitted while in parallel the authorities are closing the circle on Arming and César, to finish the tape with the awaited rebellion simian and the later battle between human beings and simians.
- oppressed societies, the best ingredient for the science fiction -
The first half of this tape is extraordinary, of the best thing that the series B can offer us. With limited resources, there develops an exciting history of oppressed societies and capture of conscience of class that would stimulate any sociologist, in addition to having the ingredient “big brother” with this constant alertness of the simians staged in these loudspeakers that distribute prevention notices against them. It is true that the final part with the awaited clash gets longer in excess offering little more than simians planes falling down on soldiers' battalions (in modest quantity, let's not forget that at this point of saga we are already with two feet got into the series B), and that for when finally these are on the point of reaching his revenge on the human shift tyrant, César's Messianic intervention puts the obliging tone and ruins the climax, but the fact is that first of all it was necessary to keep aces in the sleeve for more aftermath. more?: Yes other one still stays … and two series of television... and a remake.
- To give him cane man!.... I say...: simian! -
In any case and for stranger who seems at this point of saga, “The rebellion of the simians” is entirely advisable, a big example of science fiction constructed with desire in the script and wise move in the achievement however much I left a sweet and sour retaste to us in the end.
Evaluation: 7/10
Certainly that by the end, it seems that originally to the friend César the pulse was not trembling and the simians were crushing cruelly any human being who was putting himself ahead, but in test passes the hearings reacted badly to so many cruelty and there was constructed in the assembly room the disappointing end that now can be in DVD. As gift of your always fervent servant Dr. Quatermass, I put to you a video of the original end that I could have found in youtube. Tremendous and clearly superior to the one that stayed for the posterity:
